H. L. GRAIL IS IT HOME?

Today, Portsmouth-born, London-based songwriter H. L. Grail (aka Holly Mullineaux) releases her spine-tinglingly vulnerable EP Island via Spinny Nights imprint Underfoot. The first singles ‘Sandman’ and ‘OTD’, garnered support from Loud & Quiet,  So Young, BBC Introducing & Rough Trade’s Counter Culture. Holly is also a member of Rough Trade's finest Goat Girl, and so H. L. Grail marks her first venture into solo territory. Written in a seaside apartment in Portsmouth, as an attempt to process a volatile and emotionally draining relationship, Island is an unfiltered outpouring of love, pain and disappointment. The penultimate track, 'Is It Home', is particularly heat-wrenching - it's an exploration of what creates a sense of home beyond fours walls and the pain that comes from the vacant space that's left when you lose a lover - Holly ponders 'Is it home now that you're gone?'. The track is played softly on acoustic guitar by Holly, with additions from Goat Girl members - Lottie Pendlebury on violin, Reuben Kyriakides Edna on synth and backing vocals on cello, as well as Euan Hinshelwood on sax and Daisy Anaïs Cydney Goodwin on backing vocals. Listen to 'Is It Home' here and be sure to check out the rest of the EP. Following a sold out show supporting Ulrika Spacek at the Bermondsey Social Club H. L. Grail will give a special performance with a full band at the community-run Ivy House in Nunhead, supported by friends and collaborators Mushy P (Goat Girl) and Edna (Goat Girl). -Ellie Rose-Davies
